I recently spoke with someone who had applied to almost 600 jobs over the past 10 months since his layoff.
His results were, unfortunately, quite disappointing.
Only 10 interviews in total. Just 3 progressed to a panel interview. And, ultimately, he received a single low-ball offer (for a contract position).
You can't help but respect his persistence.
That's a lot of rejection to handle while maintaining a positive attitude.
Much like a doctor diagnosing a patient, I set out to identify the root of his problem.
In his case, the ratio of applications to interviews was alarmingly low.
We analyzed his resume and identified three main issues:
1. The resume wasn’t tailored to highlight his suitability for specific roles. It focused on what he considered his major career achievements, which didn’t resonate with potential employers.
↳ He needed to start customizing his resume for each application.
2. He was wasting a lot of time applying for jobs that weren't a good fit. Either he lacked the qualifications, or the positions didn't align with a logical career path.
↳ He needed to stop "panic applying" and focus on more suitable roles.
3. Employers dismissed his application before even getting to know him.
↳ Often, his resume was rejected in mere seconds. He needed to enhance his visibility by becoming more active and strategic on LinkedIn.
After revamping his resume, refining his job search strategy, and leveraging targeted networking on LinkedIn, his results improved significantly.
From 64 applications, he secured 12 job interviews, 5 on-site interviews, and received 3 offers.
All from relatively simple changes in approach.
Remember, the job market is highly competitive (especially for remote positions).
